![]() There's good ear training sites online you can use and the theory and ear training parts are tedious but important there's a lot of repetitive, mind numbingly boring stuff singers do backstage when nobodies watching to get good, despite making it look effortless! Thousands of hours of tedious work, but it's an important part of how they develop their talent Warm up before hand by playing scales on your piano and singing along with the scales up and down as you go along to further drill the intervals into your brain and train your voiceĪs a side project, work on your theory and ear training. The important part here is paying attention to what chords and notes you're playing and infusing them to yourself and becoming familiar with the intervals. Listen to the intervals between the notes and familiarise yourself with them. Play along until you can parrot it perfectly. Work it out on the piano and memorise what notes are what in the melody. If you need sheet music or video tutorials that's fine, it takes a while before you can figure stuff out instinctivelyĪfter that, work out the melody. Don't worry about singing, just practice the chords and memorise the key and chords in your head. Pick simple easy tunes, you have to learn to walk before you can run and work up to the harder stuffįirst, work out the key and the chords on the piano. My advice would be to pick 5 of your favourite songs to sing which are simply and easy, not too complex or fast or beyond your ability and range. You have to be familiar with the music and know the music intimately and thoroughly, and have a well tuned ear To be efficient you have to be able to recognise intervals instinctively and be fluent in theory and speak the language well. Since it comes from inside, in order to be professional and strong, you have to have an exceptionally sharp ear and spend more time practicing, but practice correctly in a relaxed manner that doesn't damage your voice you have to gradually improve over a period of years. In that respect, singing is tricker than other instruments. There is no guide, it has to come from within. We can learn the notes on the fretboard quite easily, they are there for us to see, but with singing it's difficult because it's all inside. You can't even begin to think about tone which is so important because you're going at it blind, the technique and volume is all off, everything is a mess Imagine your voice is a guitar could you pick up the guitar and play a convincing solo without knowing what notes are what on the fretboard? Not really, you could play around with trial and error and find the notes you're looking for, but it would be sloppy and you'd hit a lot of bum notes in the process because you're working blindfolded as you don't know what notes you are playing or where the notes you want can be found on the fretboard. If you know what you're singing as you're singing it, you become more confident and stronger and free to relax and loosen up Once I know what notes make up the melodies in the song I have a better grasp of it, and I know I'm singing an A note and then going up to a C note for example. The best thing for me is to work out the key and chord progression, and then work out the melody. When I play guitar I treat it like a voice, and when I sing I treat it like a guitar. I always say to myself, sing like your voice is a guitar solo and solo like your guitar is a voice. So this means that a solid ear for intervals and a solid understanding of theory is a big help To sing at your best potential, you have to be throughly familiar with the piece in it's lyrics and music you have to know every chord and every note and every change of the piece intimately and fluently, you have to almost infuse the piece to yourself and know it inside and out before you can master it Ideally when singing you want to know the key you're singing in, the chords that are playing as they're playing, the notes you're singing as you're singing them, and the notes which come next.
